La Sant Andreu Jazz Band (SAJB)
The Sant Andreu Jazz Band is a jazz orchestra founded by Joan Chamorro in the Sant Andreu neighbourhood of Barcelona in 2006, with the aim of creating a space where young musicians could learn, grow and express themselves through the language of jazz.
Their music combines elements of classical swing with more modern influences, creating a fresh and vibrant sound that has captivated audiences all over the world (France, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Cincinatti and many more). They have shared the stage with renowned artists such as Jesse Davis, Terell Stafford, Wycliffe Gordon, Perico Sambeat and many others.
In addition to live performances, the band has recorded more than 30 albums (13 albums in the Jazzing collection and 18 in the Joan Chamorro Presents collection) which have received critical acclaim and have been well received by the public. His recordings showcase a wide range of styles and genres within jazz, from classical standards to original compositions. Their entire discography and most of the songs that have been recorded on video are available on this website.
It is currently made up of 26 musicians from 7 to 21 years old, but over the more than 17 years of its existence, more than 80 children and young people have passed through the band. The SAJB has produced musicians of the stature of Andrea Motis, Rita Payés, Èlia Bastida and Joan Mar Sauqué, all of them with consolidated international careers.
This project has been the inspiration for other similar projects around the world, having formalised collaborations with the Mayeusis Foundation (Vigo) and the Fábrica La Isleta (Gran Canaria).
In 2021 the Sant Andreu Jazz Band won the Alícia Award for educational project, awarded by the Catalan Academy of Music.
